My next guest there is Thomas Tommy Betzler... So in my journeys I still remain in the area of electronic music …..
Aleksandra Przybylska: Thomas, you are associated mostly as charismatic drummer, cooperated with Klaus Schulze, but he isn't one and only musician with whom you recordered albums. Who more did stand on your music path?
Thomas Tommy Betzler: So I will tell you my story from the beginning.
I was drummer and the leader of the band P'cock. In 1979 Klaus Schulze discovered us and produced 2 records – „The Prophet“ (1980) and „In'cognito“ (1981). During this time I played different concerts together with Klaus Schulze (e.g. Stahlsinfonie in Linz) and acted on severals recordings for Klaus and further IC-artists (e.g. Robert Schröder).
Now, more than 30 years after I finished my career to the benefit of my job as a caterer for rock bands and film teams (with more than 800 concerts per year), a lucky fortune took me back to the stage. At the visit of the Schallwelle Award in 2011 on the occasion of the Life's work Award for Klaus Schulze, I met Thorsten Quaeschning and his band Picture Palace music. Shortly after this meeting, Thorsten invited me to a guest performance with the band, which took place at the Electronic Circus in October in Guetersloh. In December I went to Berlin on invitation of Thorsten Quaesching for the recording of the latest Picture Palace music CD „Indulge the Passion“.
In January 2012 then I performed together with Eric van der Heijden, whom I met at the Electronic Circus, at the New Years Concert of Ron Boots. This performance was followed by several concerts with Picture Palace music in Oirschot (April 2012) and Berlin (August 2012) and with Eric van der Heijden in Bochum (December 2012). After Christmas I went to Berlin again to meet Thorsten Quaeschning and the members of Picture Palace music – this time for the recording of a soundtrack for a documentary film.
Likewise at the Electronic Circus I met Torsten Abel – TMA. At a visit of a performance of Torsten together with the Ambient Circle in Essen in November 2011, we agreed upon a cooperation in 2012. At a further come-together in summer we got into details and planned a common performance, which took successfully place in Bocholt in November.
Beside the concert in Oirschot at the E-Live together with Torsten Abel (TMA), Martin Rohleder (Martinson) and Wolfgang Barkowski (Alien Nature) more performances and recordings with Picture Palace music and Eric van der Heijden are planned for 2013.
A.P.: I don't want to ask you with who did you work better or worst... I am sure with every of these people in different way...But I suppose you have your one beloved song, record, gig... and I am not asking you about more or less obiective substantive assessment of that. I am just curious what you remember nicest...some pleasant circumstance.... nice assotiation... something, where you are willingly coming back in your thoughts...
T.B.: Sure it was great to work with Klaus - but this is now more than 30 years ago and with my band P'cock - we've been too early with our way of music, that's why I try to rerelease the both records that Klaus produced with us - just trying to get back all necessary rights and then we will see. Currently my most beloved record is the last PPm "Indulge the Passion" - as I've never believed to read my name on a record as a musician again - and this after 30 years of absolutely no making music (I even had no drum-set when I played for the first time with PPm). I love this band and Thorsten and I got really good friends in the last year. It is my intention to support the band whereever I can and do my part that the band will be successful.
A.P: Recently in one of Radio station ( my favorite) was emited brodcast about group – P'cock. Who is Al P'cock? Tell us a little bit about this period in your creativity time.
T.B.: Yes, Al P'cock was just the name for the GEMA and was my artist name for this case. We believed to be on the rigth way, but unfortunately our first record was released at the same date as Ideal released theirs. As we were both at WEA, they decided to push Ideal, not us - that was our misfortune. The second record was released also at the IC-Label but this time Deutsche Austrophon was the record label - and the IC-Label was in a kind of demobilization... shortly after this I left the band to work in my company that I founded in 1980 as a caterer for rock bands. P'cock prodúced one more record with Klaus without me, then this cooperation finished.
A.P: Recently you are colaborating i with other musicians in frame of project Electronic Circus. Tell us something about it. When you've started this cooperation? Who deos perform exept you in this project? And something about plas on the future?
T.B.: No, no there you are wrong. Electronic Circus is an event - a small festival for electronic music that takes place every year in autumn in Gütersloh. The guys of Electronic Circus are real fans that started this Festival, as far as I know, 6 years ago with very small capital. Now the festival is a whole day long with 5 or 6 live bands - all from the electronic scene, like Picture Palace music, St. Otten, Glenn Main, Vraigaist, Michael Shipway or Steve Schroyder.
As I've told you before I was invited by Thorsten Quaeschning from Picture Palace music to participate as a guest drummer at their gig at the Electronic Circus in 2011.
A.P: And one more case from the last days... In Berlin you recorded new stuff. I know already it is not new album...so what is it?
The recording in Berlin in December 2012 was for a documentary film which is about the political situation, but not in Europe. But sorry to say, this stuff is so "hot" that I'm not allowed to tell you more about it.
A.P: And the most important question for all your fans – where and when in 2013 year it could hear Thomas Betzler alive ?
Ha, ha, yes, there will be some chances to see me live this year. The first concert will be a premiere, I will perform together with Torsten Abel (TMA) - with him I performed in November for the first time. But this time there will be 2 more well known electronic musicians: Martin Rohleder aka Martinson and Wolfgang Barkowski aka Alien Nature. This performance will take place on the 6th of April in Oirschot (near Eindhoven) at the E-Live-Festival. In May it is planned to have one or two days with Picture Palace music at the Swimmingpool Festival in Berlin at the Stadtbad in Berlin-Steglitz. Then in June a gig is planned in Berlin on a Festival, but up to now there are no more information about this. On the 3rd August we will perform at the Wald-Welt-Festival in Eggerszell (Bavaria), another concert is planned in November at the Paulus-Kultur-Kirche in Dortmund and at least on the 30th of December at the Planetarium in Dortmund. These gigs are all with Picture Palace music. Further performances will be with TMA and friends and for sure with Eric van der Heijden, but these dates are not yet fixed.

A.P.: Thomas, jesteś przede wszystkim kojarzony jako charyzmatyczny perkusista współpracujący z Klausem Schulze, ale to nie jedyny muzyk z którym nagrywałeś. Kto jeszcze stanął na Twojej muzycznej drodze?
T.B.: Może rozpocznę od samego początku... Byłem perkusistą i liderem grupy P'cock. W 1979 roku Klaus Schulze odkrył nas i wyprodukował dwie nasze płyty „The Prophet“ (1980) i „In'cognito“ (1981). W tym czasie często grywałem z Schulze na różnych koncertach (np. Stahlsinfonie w Linz) i wielokrotnie brałem udział w nagraniach dla niego, oraz innych muzyków wytwórni IC (Innovative Communications) np. Roberta Schrödera.
Teraz, po trzydziestu latach z okładem, odkąd zakończyłem swoją karierę na rzecz pracy zawodowej związanej z obsługą zespołów rockowych i grup filmowych (więcej niż 800 koncertów rocznie), szczęśliwy traf sprowadził mnie z powrotem na muzyczną scenę. W czasie Schallwelle Award w 2011 roku, z okazji przyznania nagrody za dorobek twórczości Klausa Schulze, spotkałem Thorstena Quaeschninga i jego zespół Picture Palace music. Krótko po tym spotkaniu, Thorsten zaprosił mnie do wzięcia udziału w koncercie w ramach Electronic Circus w październiku w Guetersloh. W grudniu, na kolejne zaproszenie Thorstena pojechałem do Berlina i również gościnnie wziąłem udział w nagraniu ostatniej płyty Picture Palace music - „Indulge the Passion“.
W styczniu 2012 roku wziąłem udział w noworocznym koncercie Rona Bootsa (New Years Concert of Ron Boots), wspólnie z Ericem van der Heijden - którego także spotkałem w trakcie Electronic Circus. Koncert ten powtarzany był jeszcze kilkukrotnie na występach z Picture Palace music w Oirschot (kwiecień 2012) i w Berlinie (sierpień 2012), oraz z Ericem van der Heijden w Bochum (grudzień 2012). Po Świętach zawędrowałam ponownie do Berlina, aby spotkać się z Thorstenem Quaeschningiem i pozostałymi członkami grupy Picture Palace music – tym razem w celu nagrania ścieżki dźwiękowej do filmu dokumentalnego.
W trakcie trwania Electronic Circus spotkałem również Torstena Abela – TMA. Podczas koncertu Torstena razem z Ambient Circle w Essen w listopadzie 2011, poczyniliśmy ustalenia w zakresie naszej dalszej współpracy w 2012 roku. Połączenie sił latem 2012 roku mieliśmy uzgodnione w szczegółach, tak samo jak najbliższy planowany koncert, który odbył się szczęśliwie w Bocholt w listopadzie.
Oprócz koncertu z Torstenem Abel (TMA), Martinem Rohleder (Martinson) i Wolfgangiem Barkowski (Alien Nature) w Oirschot na E-Live Festival w 2013 roku przewidziane są dalsze koncerty i nagrania z Picture Palace music i Ericem van der Heijden.
A.P.: Nie chcę pytać z kim pracowało się lepiej czy gorzej... Jestem pewna, że z każdym na pewno inaczej... Przypuszczam jednak, że masz jakiś ulubiony utwór... płytę... koncert... I nie pytam o mniej lub bardziej obiektywną ocenę pod względem merytorycznym... Ciekawa jestem co wspominasz najmilej... jakieś sympatyczne wydarzenie... miłe skojarzenie... Coś, do czego chętnie wracasz myślami...
T.B.: Pewnie, że wspaniale było pracować z Klausem Schulze - ale to już ponad 30 lat od czasów P'cock. Byliśmy jednak zbyt nowatorscy z naszą muzyką i to jest powód dla którego próbuję wydać ponownie obie płyty, które Klaus wyprodukował z nami – staram się odzyskać wszelkie niezbędne prawa – a potem zobaczymy.
Ostatnio moją ukochaną płytą jest ostatni krążek PPm "Indulge the Passion". Nie wierzyłem, że przeczytam jeszcze własne nazwisko wymienione jako muzyka biorącego udział w nagraniu płyty... po tych 30 latach absolutnego nic nie robienia w muzyce. Nawet nie miałem własnego zestawu perkusji, kiedy zagrałem po raz pierwszy z PPm. Kocham ten zespół i Thorstena. Ostatniego roku zyskałem naprawdę dobrych przyjaciół. Mam zamiar wspierać tę grupę cokolwiek się zdarzy i zrobić wszystko co możliwe z mojej strony aby zespół odniósł sukces.
A.P.: Ostatnio w jednym (moim ulubionym) radio (Radio Aspekt, przypis D.K) była emitowana płyta grupy P'cock. Kim jest Al P'cock ? Opowiedz troszkę o tym okresie Twojej twórczości.
T.B.: Tak, Al P'cock było po prostu nazwiskiem na potrzeby GEMA i w tym przypadku było moim artystycznym pseudonimem. Wierzyliśmy, że jesteśmy na właściwej drodze, ale niefortunnie nasz pierwszy krążek został wydany tego samego dnia którego Ideal wypuścił swój. Ponieważ razem byliśmy w WEA, zdecydowali się przepchnąć Ideal, nie nas – to był nasz pech. Druga płyta realizowana była także w IC-Label, ale tym razem firmował to Deutsche Austrophon – a IC-Label była w rodzaju demobilizacji... Krótko po tym opuściłem zespół, by móc pracować w swojej firmie, którą założyłem w 1980 jako świadczącą usługi na rzecz kapel rockowych. P'cock wyprodukował jeszcze jedną płytę z Klausem beze mnie, potem ta współpraca się skończyła.
A.P.: Ostatnio współpracujesz z innymi muzykami w ramach projektu Electronic Circus. Powiedz nam coś o nim. Kiedy rozpocząłeś tę współpracę? Kto jeszcze działa z Tobą w ramach tego projektu? No i oczywiście o planach na przyszłość...
T.B.: Nie...nie... Tu w tej kwestii jesteś w błędzie. Electronic Circus to wydarzenie muzyczne – niewielki festiwal muzyki elektronicznej odbywający się każdego roku jesienią w Gütersloh. Twórcy Electronic Circus są prawdziwymi fanami muzyki elektronicznej i jeśli dobrze pamiętam, rozpoczynali całe przedsięwzięcie z niewielkim kapitałem 6 lat temu. Obecnie festiwal trwa cały dzień – od rana do wieczora - a na scenie można zobaczyć na żywo 5 - 6 zespołów i wszystkie z elektronicznej sceny jak np.: Picture Palace music, St. Otten, Glenn Main, Vraigaist, Michael Shipway lub Steve Schroyder. Jak wspomniałem wcześniej - zostałem zaproszony przez Thorstena Quaeschning z Picture Palace music do wzięcia udziału gościnnie jako perkusista w ich koncercie podczas Electronic Circus in 2011.
A.P.: I jeszcze jedna sprawa z ostatnich dni... W Berlinie nagrywałeś nowy materiał. Już wiem, że nie jest to nowy album. Co to takiego?
T.B.: Nagranie z Berlina 2012 roku zostało zrealizowane na potrzeby filmu dokumentalnego obrazującego pewną sytuację polityczną poza Europą... Ale przykro mi to mówić – materiał jest wciąż tak „gorący”, że nie jestem upoważniony powiedzieć Ci nic więcej na ten temat.
A.P.: No i najważniejsze pytanie dla wszystkich Twoich fanów – gdzie i kiedy można w 2013 roku zobaczyć Thomasa Betzlera na żywo.
Ha ha... Tak, w tym roku będzie kilka sposobności zobaczyć mnie na żywo. Pierwszy z koncertów będzie prawdziwą premierą. Będę występował razem z Torstenem Abel (TMA) – po raz pierwszy koncertowałem z nim w listopadzie ubiegłego roku. Jednak tym razem będzie więcej o dwóch dobrze znanych wykonawców muzyki elektronicznej - Martina Rohledera z Martinson i Wolfganga Barkowski z Alien Nature. Ten koncert odbędzie się 6 kwietnia w Oirschot (okolice Eindhoven) w ramach E-Live Festival. W maju planowany jest jeden lub dwa dni koncertów z Picture Palace music na „Swimmingpool Festival in Berlin” w Stadtbad w dzielnicy Berlin-Steglitz. W czerwcu odbędzie się kolejny koncert na „Festival” – ale jak dotąd nie posiadam żadnych szczegółowych informacji. Trzeciego sierpnia będziemy koncertować na „Wald-Welt-Festival” w Eggerszell (Bavaria), a następny koncert planowany jest w listopadzie w Paulus-Kultur-Kirche w Dortmundzie … No i na koniec 30 grudnia w Planetarium w Dortmundzie. Wszystkie te zaplanowane koncerty odbędą się wraz z Picture Palace music. Oprócz nich będą także koncerty z TMA & friends, oraz z pewnością z Ericem van der Heijden, ale ich daty nie są jeszcze ustalone.
