Interview with Tommy Thomas Betzler

Polskie tłumaczenie poniżej

The next of my music journeys is wandering to the West... Germany... Darmstadt...
My next guest there is Thomas Tommy Betzler... So in my journeys I still remain in the area of electronic music …..

Aleksandra Przybylska: Thomas, you are associated mostly as charismatic drummer, cooperated with Klaus Schulze, but he isn't one and only musician  with whom you recordered albums. Who more did stand  on your music path?

Thomas Tommy Betzler: So I will tell you my story from the beginning.

I was drummer and the leader of the band P'cock. In 1979 Klaus Schulze discovered us and produced 2 records – „The Prophet“ (1980) and „In'cognito“ (1981). During this time I played different concerts together with Klaus Schulze (e.g. Stahlsinfonie in Linz) and acted on severals recordings for Klaus and further IC-artists (e.g. Robert Schröder).

Now, more than 30 years after I finished my career to the benefit of my job as a caterer for rock bands and film teams (with more than 800 concerts per year), a lucky fortune took me back to the stage. At the visit of the Schallwelle Award in 2011 on the occasion of the Life's work Award for Klaus Schulze, I met Thorsten Quaeschning and his band Picture Palace music. Shortly after this meeting, Thorsten invited me to a guest performance with the band, which took place at the Electronic Circus in October in Guetersloh. In December I went to Berlin on invitation of Thorsten Quaesching for the recording of the latest Picture Palace music CD „Indulge the Passion“.

In January 2012 then I performed together with Eric van der Heijden, whom I met at the Electronic Circus, at the New Years Concert of Ron Boots. This performance was followed by several concerts with Picture Palace music in Oirschot (April 2012) and Berlin (August 2012) and with Eric van der Heijden in Bochum (December 2012). After Christmas I went to Berlin again to meet Thorsten Quaeschning and the members of Picture Palace music – this time for the recording of a soundtrack for a documentary film.

Likewise at the Electronic Circus I met Torsten Abel – TMA. At a visit of a performance of Torsten together with the Ambient Circle in Essen in November 2011, we agreed upon a cooperation in 2012. At a further come-together in summer we got into details and planned a common performance, which took successfully place in Bocholt in November.

Beside the concert in Oirschot at the E-Live together with Torsten Abel (TMA), Martin Rohleder (Martinson) and Wolfgang Barkowski (Alien Nature) more performances and recordings with Picture Palace music and Eric van der Heijden are planned for 2013.

A.P.: I don't want to ask you with who did you work better or worst... I am sure with every of these people in different way...But I suppose you have your one beloved song, record, gig... and I am not asking you about more or less obiective substantive assessment of that. I am just curious what you remember nicest...some pleasant  circumstance.... nice assotiation... something, where you are willingly coming back in your thoughts...

T.B.: Sure it was great to work with Klaus - but this is now more than 30 years ago and with my band P'cock - we've been too early with our way of music, that's why I try to rerelease the both records that Klaus produced with us - just trying to get back all necessary rights and then we will see. Currently my most beloved record is the last PPm "Indulge the Passion" - as I've never believed to read my name on a record as a musician again - and this after 30 years of absolutely no making music (I even had no drum-set when I played for the first time with PPm). I love this band and Thorsten and I got really good friends in the last year. It is my intention to support the band whereever I can and do my part that the band will be successful.

A.P: Recently in one of Radio station ( my favorite) was emited brodcast about  group – P'cock. Who is Al P'cock? Tell us a little bit about this period in your creativity time.

T.B.: Yes, Al P'cock was just the name for the GEMA and was my artist name for this case. We believed to be on the rigth way, but unfortunately our first record was released at the same date as Ideal released theirs. As we were both at WEA, they decided to push Ideal, not us - that was our misfortune. The second record was released also at the IC-Label but this time Deutsche Austrophon was the record label - and the IC-Label was in a kind of demobilization... shortly after this I left the band to work in my company that I founded in 1980 as a caterer for rock bands. P'cock prodúced one more record with Klaus without me, then this cooperation finished.

A.P: Recently you are colaborating i with other musicians in  frame of project Electronic Circus. Tell us something about it. When you've started this cooperation? Who deos perform exept you in this project? And something about plas on the future?

T.B.: No, no there you are wrong. Electronic Circus is an event - a small festival for electronic music that takes place every year in autumn in Gütersloh. The guys of Electronic Circus are real fans that started this Festival, as far as I know, 6 years ago with very small capital. Now the festival is a whole day long with 5 or 6 live bands - all from the electronic scene, like Picture Palace music, St. Otten, Glenn Main, Vraigaist, Michael Shipway or Steve Schroyder.

As I've told you before I was invited by Thorsten Quaeschning from Picture Palace music to participate as a guest drummer at their gig at the Electronic Circus in 2011.

A.P: And one more case from the last days... In Berlin you recorded new stuff. I know already it is not new album...so what is it?

The recording in Berlin in December 2012 was for a documentary film which is about the political situation, but not in Europe. But sorry to say, this stuff is so "hot" that I'm not allowed to tell you more about it.

A.P: And the most important question for all your fans – where and when in 2013 year  it could hear Thomas Betzler alive ?

Ha, ha, yes, there will be some chances to see me live this year. The first concert will be a premiere, I will perform together with Torsten Abel (TMA) - with him I performed in November for the first time. But this time there will be 2 more well known electronic musicians: Martin Rohleder aka Martinson and Wolfgang Barkowski aka Alien Nature. This performance will take place on the 6th of April in Oirschot (near Eindhoven) at the E-Live-Festival. In May it is planned to have one or two days with Picture Palace music at the Swimmingpool Festival in Berlin at the Stadtbad in Berlin-Steglitz. Then in June a gig is planned in Berlin on a Festival, but up to now there are no more information about this. On the 3rd August we will perform at the Wald-Welt-Festival in Eggerszell (Bavaria), another concert is planned in November at the Paulus-Kultur-Kirche in Dortmund and at least on the 30th of December at the Planetarium in Dortmund. These gigs are all with Picture Palace music. Further performances will be with TMA and friends and for sure with Eric van der Heijden, but these dates are not yet fixed.

A.P: Thank you very much that you agreed answer for few questions. For fans of eelktronic music you are important part its history and they would like to see you on gigs by us. I hope it will happen one day. Thank you one more time.

T.B: Kind regards!

Następna z moich muzycznych podróży, to wędrówka na zachód... Niemcy... Darmstadt.

Byłem perkusistą i liderem grupy P'cock. W 1979 roku Klaus Schulze odkrył nas i wyprodukował dwie nasze płyty „The Prophet“ (1980)  i „In'cognito“ (1981).

W styczniu 2012 roku wziąłem udział w noworocznym koncercie Rona Bootsa  (New Years Concert of Ron Boots), wspólnie z Ericem van der Heijden - którego także spotkałem w trakcie Electronic Circus.

Coś, do czego chętnie wracasz myślami...

Ostatnio moją ukochaną płytą jest ostatni krążek PPm "Indulge the Passion". Kocham ten zespół i Thorstena.

A.P.: Ostatnio współpracujesz  z innymi muzykami w ramach projektu Electronic Circus. Powiedz nam coś o nim. Kiedy rozpocząłeś tę współpracę? Kto jeszcze działa z Tobą w ramach tego projektu? No i oczywiście o planach na przyszłość...

A.P.: I jeszcze jedna sprawa z ostatnich dni...

No i na koniec 30 grudnia w  Planetarium w Dortmundzie.

Glenn Main Henriksen - Just hard work to reach the sky

Polskie swobodne tłumaczenie poniżej :)

My first unsubmissive musician, whom I've asked for a short talk in that space for the lost, is Glenn Main Henriksen. So we are going to the North... High North... Norway...
Glenn has been a musician since he was 4 years old... and since this moment he seems to have treated all what he has been doing in that matter quite seriously.... and he does it really well.
I had an incredible pleasure to hear him alive...so if I can be objective....I am... I am trying to be...

Aleksandra Przybylska: Glenn, you aren't a well-known artist to Polish audience... You haven't performed for us yet...so it has to be changed soon! We don't know much about you and your music.....
Tell us...who is Glenn Main Henriksen? What does he like? What does he avoid? Who does Glenn see looking in the mirror?

Glenn Main Henriksen: Glenn is a very regular guy with a big interest for music. I started playing as you mentioned when I was 4 years old. And at a age of 5 I had an accident wit my right arm.. It was cut strait of when I felt right throug a window... The doctors saved my arm, and they said I had to play piano for at least two hours a day to rebuild my arm again.. So then I had a good reason to play.
I like to meet new people and discover new music. I live to travel and I love the heat. I HATE winter and snow.. Cold and dark.. Not my style:-) so that's why I have bought a house in Thailand. Hopefully my music can reach Asia as well, and hopefully there will be gigs to play there. I try to avoid negative people and negative energy. I consider myself as a happy man, and want to share my happy energy with others. When I see myself in the mirror I see a regular man with a "hunger" to make music for the people. I see a happy man who actually can earn his living by playing music.. And that puts a smile on my face every day. I love my kids and my girlfriend, and they make me happy, and they support me in my work as a musician. And my kids plays music too.. My son is a great keyboard player and my daughter plays guitar and sings.

A.P.:  Why have you a passion for the music? Are you from a music-family or are you a natural born talent?
You mentioned  about your children... but do you have some music roots ...or was it just accident wit the window?

G.M.H.: My grandfather played the accordion and the organ. I thought it was exiting to use the drum machine and the sounds in the organ. I was playing along with the radio, and everytime the song "Popcorn" played on the radio, I played along... And my mother said I had a great talent for music, and she sendt me to a piano/organ school. I fouled my teacher in believing I could read the scoores... But in reality I just looked and listened to what he did, and I played the same as him... I fouled him for a couple of years.
My kids are the same... They just listen to songs and play along without reading scores. .
So they have the same natural talent as me  the window was an accident. I was running up a stair, and I fell on the top and my arm hit the window. It broke the window in thousand pieces , and cut my arm off. I was seconds from dying.. So that's another good reason to wake up happy every morning

A.P.:  It is terrible story with your arm.... but with happy end... In Poland we say: all is well that ends well ... so let it be this way... But why exactly is it electronic music? What unique is about it? Why did you choose this piece of cake for you?

G.M.H.: One of my first albums I got on my ghetto Blaster was Jean Michel Jarres "Oxygene". I was listening to it almost every night to sleep. I had my first synthesiser when I was 10 Years old... The Korg MS10.. And I discovered that also I could make lots of the same sounds that Jarre did on the album...
I guess electronic music has always been in the back if my head. Although I have been playing in lots if different bands in lots of different styles, I think EM is the closest I get to "Myself".
And it's timeless music as well, so one does not have to struggle to get the "hit" right away. For me it's important to have as many albums as possible available for the audience. So I try to release at least one album each year. And follow them up with gigs... And I would love to come to Poland to play. One of my first "fans" was from Poland.

A.P.:  About Jean Micheal Jarre... In your music it can clearly hear the influences of his compositions. Who, except for J.M.J. had an impact on your creativity? Whose albmus do you reach for mostly?

G.M.H.: I have Been listening a lot to Kitarao, vangelis, pink floyd, mike oldfield,Kraftverk and one of my other favourites : Howard Jones and Depeche Mode.
In my music I try to reach all the people that wants some "relaxing" music , and to the EM fans of course. I also have a song on the "Cafe Del Mare 17" album
As well.

A.P.: Personal likes as far as music is concerned rather shouldn't be discussed. All of us perceive music in a different way.... and it is the real beauty of music...These are our individual and almost intime feelings... I admit , that I am under a huge impression of „Inner Voices”- it is my favourite.... but I also love listening to „Message to Poland” „Message to China”, „Total Meltdown”. Which of his own tracks does Glenn Main Henriksen like himself? With which ones are you the most proud of? Which one is the closest to the ideal?

G.M.H.: I think "Message to Poland" is very special to me... because of the heavy drums and the big pads... But all my songs are special to me in a way. Total meltdown is also a very nice one.
But my new album "Ripples" is for me a very nice album. I use the piano a lot, and its very close to New Age music. Maybe the most relaxing album I have made.

A.P.:  And one favorite track?

G.M.H.:  Right now it's „Echoes from the past”. That is my favourite.

A.P.:  In 2008 you recorded „Electronic Street”... Then appeared „Message” „ Arctic Treasures”, Christmatronic”. The last of your albums is „Ripples”. Maybe there is something what you are working on now? Are you going to release some new album soon or do you need some time for a break after an intense year 2012 ?

G.M.H.: No breaks for me  Just hard work to reach the sky.

A.P.:  Could you give us some details about your new project if it's not a secret

G.M.H.: I have two projects going.. One with vocals (depeche Mode style) And one instrumental.. It will be very electronic.. Maybe I will record an live album at the Planetariom gig in Germany..

A.P.:  And the last question, maybe the most important for your fans. What with your performance plans? Will we see you again in Oirschot on E-Live Festival? Maybe you are planning to have a concert in Poland? Do we also have a chance to listen to you alive?

G.M.H.: I am booking my 2013 now this days.. And I really hope to plot in Poland in my concert plans. I hope to come back to E-live again and maybe Electronic Circus.. E-Day is also a possibility.. And if there are any concert arrangers out there reading this.. I would love to have some gigs :-))

A.P.:  Thank you very much, that you agreed to talk to me and tell me a little bit about you and your music. I hope, that New Year 2013 will bring you a lot of music inspirations so that you will create even more beautiful and expressive music (if that’s possible ).... and I really wish it to come true for you...
and we are inviting you to perform in Poland

G.M.H.: Thank you so much Aleksandra :-)).

A.P.:  Thank you too Glenn and I hope to see you soon...somewhere in the wide world!

Glenn Main Henriksen

2008 : Electronic Secret
2009 : Message

Polish translate:

A robi to naprawdę nieźle...

I niewiele wiemy o Tobie i Twojej muzyce...
Powiedz kim jest Glenn Main Henriksen? Co lubi? Czego unika? Kogo widzi przeglądając się w lustrze?

G.M.H.: Glenn to zwyczajny facet poważnie traktujący muzykę ... No więc miałem dobry powód aby grać...
Lubię spotykać nowych ludzi i odkrywać nową muzykę. Żyję dla podróżowania i kocham upały. Nienawidzę zimy i śniegu... mrozu i ciemności... Kocham moje dzieci i partnerkę życiową...

A.P.: Skąd u Ciebie pasja do muzyki?

Moje dzieci są takie same.

Słuchałem go niemal każdej nocy przed snem.

A.P.: W Twojej muzyce słychać wyraźnie  fascynację twórczością Jeana Micheala Jarre'a... Kto oprócz niego wywarł wpływ na Twoją własną twórczość... Po czyje płyty sięgasz najchętniej?

G.M.H.: Słuchałem dużo Kitaro, Vangelisa, Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfielda, Kraftwerk i jednego z moich ulubionych artystów: Howarda Jonesa i Depeche Mode.

To nasze osobiste, prawie intymne odczucia. „Message to China”...”Total Meltdown”.

A.P.: A jeden ulubiony utwór?

G.M.H.: W tej chwili to jest „Echoes from the past”. To mój aktualnie ulubiony utwór.

A.P.: W 2008 roku nagrałeś „Electronic Street”.

G.M.H.: Mam aktualnie dwa takie projekty. Jeden z wokalem w stylu Depeche Mode i jeden instrumentalny. Będzie to naprawdę elektroniczny krążek.

A.P.: No i ostatnie pytanie – pewnie najważniejsze dla Twoich fanów.

Journey's to the unknown

JOURNEY TO THE UNKNOWN
Damian, with his all understanding to my lack of professionalism in that matter gave me some room on his blog... a little bit of space for the lost... for people on their way.... for all of these, for whom it is more important to search than to find...It is supposed to be a journey to unknown.... to the world of music which you rather won't listen to on the radio or on tv... and if so...it would be a rare guest there... It won't be neither better nor worst than other....but who of us has the right to decide about it....
It will be a journey into the world of unsubmissive people... full of passion and sensitivity …. sounds and colours....I would like them to show us (in as well as a little joking and a little serious way) all its shades.... tastes … I would like them to let us touch the most hidden secrets....
I‘m inviting you to a journey to unknown... journey full of sounds...
